Although LASIK surgery is the most common option, not all people qualify for the procedure. However, your disqualification from LASIK may not disqualify you from LASEK, another refractive option.

LASEK combines methods from both LASIK and PRK, and can serve as an alternative to both procedures to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. LASEK also uses a laser to reshape the cornea to correctly focus light on the retina and clear your vision.

If you have a thinner-than-average or flat cornea, you will likely be disqualified from LASIK, but may still be a candidate for LASEK. Instead of creating a large corneal flap as is done in LASIK, the LASEK procedure only creates a flap in the epithelial layer of the eye. This creates a much thinner flap than LASIK, lessening the likelihood of removing too much cornea with the excimer laser. Additionally, if you have a higher degree of nearsightedness, you may qualify for the LASEK procedure instead of LASIK. This is because this specific condition requires more tissue removal from the central cornea to correct the refractive error. LASEK could also be a safer option for you if your occupation or general hobbies put you at a higher risk of eye injury, which would compromise the corneal flap created by LASIK surgery. At Better Vision New Jersey, our physicians will take all of these factors into account as they assess the best possible treatment for your specific needs.

Just as with PRK, a contact lens is worn for about 3 days to assist the healing process, and you additionally will need to administer topical steroid eye drops for a few weeks after the procedure. The recovery from LASEK generally requires more time than LASIK to fully return to optimal vision. Although the recovery time is longer, averaging from about 4-7 days, and there may be more discomfort involved, you will achieve very similar results with LASEK as you would with LASIK.
